Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fetches Historic Bid of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.
The successful bid for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants domestically and internationally.
"The first tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the company president, a notable bidder at the yearly January sale.
Dubbed the King of Tuna, this businessman is famous for submitting record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "surprised at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated rapidly."
This latest purchase surpasses his own historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," remarked one satisfied diner.
